There are two bus companies that operate within Edinburgh which can be quite confusing (even for us scots). Lothian buses are generally maroon coloured and have a comprehensive website showing routes. Journeys cost £1 for adults for any distance on a route or you could buy a Day Ticket from the driver for £2.30 for unlimited travel. A Nightbus service operates on a limited amount of routes at a cost of £2 per journey (day tickets are not valid on these). First Buses operate buses from the city out to the suburbs and beyond and operate a similar Day Ticket scheme (from £2.30) that is zoned. Theme: Bus

By Air: If you depart from Heathrow Airport in London , it would take you around 1 hour to be (Turnhouse Airport ) in Edinburgh . And from the airport to Edinburgh's city centre would take you another 25 mins by airport bus . By Train: From Kingcross station ( London ) to Waverley station would cost you around 4 hrs or 4.5 hrs . Bus: If you are gonna stay only in the city centre then I think you can just walk around and seeing all the things in the downtown . When you feel tired , you can just go to a near by prak and sit on the bench enjoy the sunshine . If you are thinking about visiting the suburbs , you may consider taking bus . The Lothian company provide a good fair of the All day pass for 1.5 pounds . And you can use it for going anywhere the whole day !! But do remember , it's only for Lothian buses . not other companies . Leave a Comment Theme: Train

Edinburgh City Council are extremely commited to an integrated transport policy. The fact that the congestion charging proposal was comprehensively rejected by the city's residents has led to a rethink . Schemes such as the Edinburgh Crossrail, the re-opening of the Waverley Line to the Borders region (due to complete in 2011) and the park and ride schemes are all popular with the public. Map of Transport Links Park & Ride Schemes The park and ride at Ingleston (M9) has now opened and complements the facility at Hermiston Gate (M8). These combine free parking and cheap bus travel (1 pound each way) into central Edinburgh. This scheme is operated by Lothian buses, Tel - 0131 5556363 The Ferrytoll park and ride was set up to reduce congestion on the Forth Road Bridge. Cost is 4.50 per adult and up to 2 children, Tel 01383 420197 The New Craighall park and ride is just offf the A1 near the city bypass. This is run in conjunction with Scotrail and offers cheap parking (50p for 24 hours) and access to the city centre via the Edinburgh crossrail network (13 min journey time). There are also 2 new schemes for South Edinburgh, the first is set to open in Dec 07 at Sherrifhall to cater for traffic using the A7/A68. The other is at Straiton, just off the A701. See the Edinburgh Council Website for more details. Theme: Car/Motor Home

The city centre of Edinburgh with the new and the old part of the town is best explored on foot. The main sights like Edinburgh Castle or Calton Hill with its odd monuments are within walking distance of Princes Street. Leave a Comment

Edinburgh Airport is located to the West of the city and is accessible via road only by taxi (£13-20) or Airbus (£3 single or £5 return). A proposed Edinburgh Airport Rail Link (EARL) is in the consultation process with the cost of a return just being announced as £7.50. Once inside the terminal there are slightly more shops and food outlets before passport control. The queues at Passport Control are always annoyingly long so allow plenty time to get to your gate. Once through to the departure lounges the facilities are more than adequate. The newly introduced smoking ban means you cannot smoke anywhere within a terminal building or bus stops so be warned. The airport is operated by BAA and is constantly evolving with the latest addition being a huge new control tower designed by Reid Architecture (these have also been commisioned to build a similar structure at Newcastle Airport). Additional departure gates are now open to the East of the main terminal (see new pics) and a new car park and passenger drop-off zone has just came into use. The website has a live flight information page that is especially useful if you are collecting folk from the airport.

I flew to Edinburgh from Dublin on Ryanair. The trip is so short that betwen takeoff and landing I don't think you are in the air for more than 30-45 minutes. Using Ryanair is perfect for trips like this as with both Edinburgh and Dublin you fly into the main airports of the city and are then just a short bus ride away from the city centre. They also offer some of the cheapest flights around. Since Ryanair is a 'no frills' airline it will cost you if you wish to buy a drink or snack onboard, but you can also bring on your own food if you wish to. I have flown with Ryanir numerous times and have never been on a flight that was delayed, and I have found the staff to always be very friendly and helpful. Leave a Comment

Edinburgh is easy to get to. The earlier you book the cheaper it is likely to be. We booked 2 months in advance with 'Easyjet' from Bristol International Airport to Edinburgh for a bargain 39 pounds return. A train from Bristol takes 6 hours 15 minutes and costs around 70 - 120 pounds. (www.thetrainline.com, or phone National Rail enquiries: 08457 484950). The coach takes about 11 hours and costs approximately 60 pounds return. (http://www.gobycoach.com, or phone: 08705 808080). Fly if you can - it only takes 1 hour and 15 minutes from Bristol and you can just hop into a taxi to get to the centre of Edinburgh. Leave a Comment

The old bus terminal was extensively refurbished as part of the Harvey Nichols developement with the result being a clean and welcoming terminal. Access is via the North East side of St Andrews Square (on RH side just past Louis Vuitton). There are left luggage lockers, some shops, WCs (20p fee) and a ticket/information office. The station closes from midnight until 0600 with buses operating from the front of the station during this period. There doesn't appear to be a dedicated website for the station but the link below has all of the bus companies that use this facility.

Lothian Buses run a frequent airport shuttle bus to the city centre for GBP3.30 single (35 minutes each way). An Airsaver for an extra 90p tacks on a day's travel on Lothian's routes in the city, handy for a day's sightseeing! Once in town you'll need to walk most places as there is no other local transport aside from the bus. It would be a nightmare driving here with all the hills, one-way systems, parking restrictions and pedestrianised streets. The train station is centrally located, perfect for days out.
