 | Edinburgh Transportation | Tips 41 - 50 of 213 | | Popular Transportation | Other Transportation Tips | All Tips (213) Excellent value for money. I've taken open top bus tours in a few cities and they are always a great way to get the lay of the land. You can take them all day so they are great for transportation around the main attractions. We took the one in Edinburgh around the route once to get the feeling of it, then we were on it twice more to go to a couple of places. Every time we had a different guide and every time we were told some different stories and learned some different facts which is pretty cool. You get the point of view of the different guides, who all seem to have different things they can tell you. Tour busses start at Waverly bridge right outside the train station. The main station in Edinburgh is Waverley where all trains will stop, however there is also a main line station at Haymarket where the most main line trains stop. If you're heading to the West of the city or transferring from Edinburgh airport for a train to Glasgow or Aberdeen then using this station could save you time and effort as the platforms are a lot closer to the bus stop. The airport bus does stop at Haymarket and there is also a taxi rank. Train times and tickets can be easily booked on the website below.

Edinburgh has an International Airport so by flying it is quite easy to get to. It also has the St James Bus Station and the Waverly Train Station. It is very easy to get to Edinburgh by public transport. If you are driving, I am not quite sure cos I have only gone from Glasgow to Edinburgh...however if you are doing that, get on the M8 and follow the signs! There is plenty of public transport in Edinburgh and the buses are fairly easy to use. You will be looking at between 60p and 90p for travel around the city centre, depending on where you are going. The taxi's in Edinburgh are actually very expensive, somewhere around London prices, but then again, most things in Edinburgh are around London prices. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

I arrived in Edinburgh by Intercity train from London's Kings Cross Station via York. Most mainline trains teminate at Edinburgh's Waverly Station, which is located in the heart of the city, just near the eastern end of Princes Street. About two miles west of Waverly Station, the second mainline station Haymarket can be found. I recommend to reserve seats in advance with your ticket when you plan to use one of the Intercity trains to the big cities in Britain. Leave a Comment

We came by plane and took the airport shuttle bus to Waverley Station (city centre) in only 25 minutes. The cost for an open return ticket is £5. There is a bus every 10 minutes. To enjoy the sights and sounds of Edinburgh, take the 'Edinburgh Tour' open-top bus. Departs throughout the day from Waverley Bridge. They have headphones with commentary in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Dutch. Of course, as the city is not that big, it is easy to do everything on foot. Getting a taxi on a weekend at kicking out time can be a huge ask so I would recommend that you have a few taxi numbers handy and book one to collect you. I generally use Festival Cabs which operate along the same lines as the more visable hackney cabs but tend not to grab the first fare available.

I recommend buying a ticket for the Tour Bus. Once you buy the ticket you can get on and off at your pleasure. Be sure to wear warm clothes as it can be blustery! I loved the scenery you could see the tops of historical buildings and statues and monuments. As you can see from the picture of the ticket you also get a discount at the castle. Arriving in Edinburgh by train, you'll most likely arrive at Waverley. Usual large station facilities including a Marks and Spencers Simply Food. Can be a bit chaotic. Also in the lowest point of the city (the rail lines come in below and beneath the castle and Princes St Gardens) so it's a climb in any direction to get out. The station is part through track, part terminus. Trains from/to England are on the outer tracks, trains to eg Glasgow are through the concourse. If your train is from the Siberia of tracks 20/21, this is completely walled off. Go up the half-hidden stairs to the right (facing-in) of the waiting hall (also an exit to the Old Town) and go left. Edinburgh airport lies fairly close to the heart of the City, and there are several companies running frequent bus services to the centre. they run limited stops but all will stop at the Haymarket and Waverley Stations which is useful for train connections. I found the most frequent service to be the number 100 (pictured) which runs about every ten minutes. The busses are modern with lots of luggage space and the drivers are very helpful. Fares are £3 single and £5 for an open return. Althou a 25 minute ride to the centre, traffice often makes this slightly longer. The attached web page is the 100 service timetable. Leave a Comment
