Parking meters are dotted along every street & only absent when double yellow lines appear (STRICTLY NO PARKING) Traffic Wardens patrol with gusto (known as the yellow peril) If you are lucky enough to find a street parking place be warned it will be tight & reverse parking will be your only option & after all that hard work be sure to feed the meter with plenty of £1 coins. You really don't need to stay in Edinburgh centre during August, when it is expensive and all the best places are booked up well in advance.
Edinburgh is a small city and its no problem to stay elsewhere and travel in for the day. Places as far north as Perth and Dundee book up during August with Ed. festival goers. Some people actually like to sleep, so stay in the countryside.
As I now live in Perth, its not a problem for me, but we used to Camp west of Ed Airport for some peace, and often stayed in Fife, just over the estuary, where life was calmer and prices more normal.
After a day of jossling crowds, queueing for tickets, hassle from touts and over priced everything, ... noise, shouting, drinking and mayhem, its really nice to escape, sleep and calm down. We found that a good nights sleep led to an early morning start and beating the crowds and the queues. It seemed most festival goers were nursing nasty hangovers (performers especially!)
Don't try to take a car into the centre of Edinburgh. If you want to stay til late at night, leave a car near a bus stop, say out by the Zoo in Corstorphine, otherwise book public transport.
Whatever you do - don't trust to luck. Book well in advance. Or its a park bench for you! Leave a Comment

Now here is a warning and danger for you....watch out for seaguls pooing on you! I heard what sounded like a CLAP and guess what landed on my shoulder? Worse still I had a had a white top on and it stood out like a big green patch of muck! Yuck! Leave a Comment

Several times has this upset me. Both seeing drivers forcing others to do this and not long ago it happened to me and my friend. She came visiting from Sweden with her 9months old daughter. This very day the wee girl was fast asleep in her pushchair. And we were waiting for the bus to go shopping at Tk Maxx (see seperate tip). The bus arrived, with 2 people on it. Still we had to wake up the child to fold the pushchair since that's Lothian Buses policy. Unbelievable!!! The bus was almost EMPTY!!! Madness.
SHAME ON YOU LOTHIAN BUSES!
(And for you who email me and say it's a safety issue and "common sence" that the pushchairs has to be folded I say this:
Swedish buses has always allowed pushchairs, for as long as I can remember. They got special devices where you tie it so it's standing put! Plus pushchairs got breaks!
Never been a safety issue here! Never been a problem!

Visiting Edinburgh is a wonderful thing except when it is raining.... this past Festival was memorable because of the veritable waterfalls pouring from the sky ad infinitum.
For all those visiting Edinburgh please be aware that it seems to rain constantly. Pack your rainproof jackets and rubber boots. Also wear layers of clothing... rain is cold and wet and you want to feel comfy while tramping the streets of this historic town. I have never known a sunny day that did not warrant a jumper or cardigan. It gets cold in the evenings and rain is likely to strike at any moment. Relish the sun, it does not happen often.
I am convinced that if I don't wear my lifejacket when shopping.... I will drown one day....
Even the dogs have raincoats..... I kit the poodles out if they have to go into the garden for a pee and a poo. Molly hates to get her hair and nails wet. Leave a Comment

We have a small army of people dedicated to making a visitor's life memorable by slapping £60 parking tickets on your car with a minute to spare on the meter. They also ticket trailers, disabled drivers for not having a sticker parked outside council offices who are trying to renew their disabled stickers and delivery vans who have stopped for 5 minutes... Edinburgh is a great city, it has lots to do and lots to see at the slowest of times. I went at the height of the festival, when there is an excess of things to do, see and listen to. Not to mention eat... This means walking around with input overload.
Waaaay too much like fun to be good for you.
Sometimes, this means you may want to sit down and veg-out fora while, perhaps watch the world wander by or race off to some effectively pointless meeting.
Some other inconsiderate people may have the same thought and dare to sit in a seat that would suit your bum better. How presumptuous. Maybe I'll go and put a towel down on every bench in Edinburgh early in the morning. Leave a Comment

The ever popular Edinburgh Festival showcasing Classical Music Theatre Opera and Dance makes for the most visited time in Summer. This years dates are 13th. August to 3rd. September. Tourist accommodation is at a premium at this time but if you're stuck you could try The Scotsman's Penthouse Suite at £1,200 per night or a lowly Study Room at £200!! Did I tell you there is an ice cream van parked up at Edinburgh Castle? Well ice cream vans attract children and he didn't even have his chimes on singing "Scotland the Brave" My camera was playing up (low Battery) and the screen kept going black so instead of a picture of the Scot's Guards Memorial I snapped the wee lassie with her ice cream cone. Lothian Road becomes dangerous at 0100 and 0300. Because the local authorities are stupid and think that causing all pubs and clubs to close at the SAME TIME will reduce street violence. Of course it totally encourages it.
