If you ever find yourself in a strange pub in Glasgow (or pretty much anywhere in Scotland) and get chatting to someone at the bar and that person asks The Question: "And whit team do you support?".
The "I'm not interested in football." is not an answer!! This will mark you as some sort of strange alien species, undoubtedly with perverse and possibly threatening attitudes to the status quo.
And of course to get the answer wrong: vis-a-vis Rangers or Celtic, could even be life-threatening.
The best answer is: "...em, (you must always start with .....em before replying to a question in Scotland) well I've always liked to see how Partick Thistle are doing, I'm not so much a fan but, you know....the Jags....well, I've always had a soft spot for them."
This usually results in all at the bar taking great pity on your many years of suffering for following such dunderheids and can even result in people buying you drinks!

In glasgow, there is still quite a lot of sectarianism...just don't support either Celtic or Rangers! I don't support either - preferring to stay well away from arguements (you would never have guessed with me being a politics student an' all!)
Personally, I much prefer to watch Rugby (I support Scotland, surprise surprise!) or to watch the Grand Prix - McLaren are the best (especially my wee scottie boy Coulthard!) Leave a Comment

As I already mentioned in my main page, Glasgow is a city which is divided from a religious point of view between catholics and protestants and nowhere else is this more visible than in football. A game between footbal clubs Rangers (protestant) and Celtic (catholic), referred to as "old firm", is an experience unrivalled to games played anywhere else. just don't get caught up in any fights afterwards. THE FOOTBALL
This should really be in the must see and do activities section but it has to be said that the 'old firm' in Glasgow is a cultural institution in itself. By all means go and watch a Celtic Rangers match - the best one is usually on January 2nd which is a public holiday in Scotland.
The thing to be aware of is the high level of violence assoiciated with these matches - there is the whole Catholic Protestant battles, which I will not go into the politics of but safe to say that feelings run high. For example,when I moved back to Glasgow this time, I was spending a saturday afternoon in the centre of town (George Square) and was unlucky enough to be having my lunch when a full-scale street battle broke out - it only lasted about two minutes as the police were on the scene immediately but considering the taunts were football related, I think it is pathetic - what kind of impression is that going to give to people visiting Glasgow. For Travellers from Spain, italy, South America etc. When in Glasgow, perhaps its best not to display any signs of your catholicism... blessing yourself or kissing your crucifix in public can, if you are unlucky lead to a bit of trouble if you happen upon the wrong type of "ned" or "mental case".
In the same context, if you have come from london and have bought a nice union jack bag with a picture of the queen, then it is best to leave that one at the hotel or the same thing could happen. Same if you have come via Ireland - dont sew that Tri-colour to your bag just yet.
Thankfully this kind of intolerance is becoming less common although there are still plenty hard core idiots still around.
The Scottish people are very friendly and you will love Glasgow!!!

There are 4 football stadiums in the city serving the four football teams and as it is supposed to be a game ,i have never answered the question''What team do you support?'' as the last thing they are asking about is football......
Best not to get into that conversation.
I have found directing conversations to stadiums ,Queens Park's Hampden stadium being the biggest and the Scots National Stadium the best is a good sidestep that no one can disagree with ;a good opener.
It is a fun city,but this{football} is a boring conversation which at best will win you a friend who cant see past this topic or a candid apraisal of why your ''team'' is wrong.
