THEATRES: Kings theatre fit for Broadway
  • Tip Rating:
  • Designed to attract the best of BROADWAY IT CELEBRATED ITS 100 BIRTHDAY {2005} with a massive refurb.and entirely new backstage. This auditorium hosts musicals operas and large scale theatre productions.I actually was given free tickets to the show by artists staying in the same place iwas in that weekend. What a beautiful thing to see such a great building newly restored and with all the best top of the range gadgetry.

Smart not formal ,women were real elegant, pity men have little sense of occasion but i did see quite a few very smart kilted men, Kilts and Knees are s..y

    THEATRES: A real alive theatre
  • Tip Rating:
  • This one recently stone cleaned is special in that it is the theatre in the city which produces its own shows without state subsidies.Surprisingly big it floats between burlesque/musichall and musical.I had passed it several times from the busstation and was given tickets from people rooming at the same place as i. Glasgow next to London has the biggest concentration of theatres outside London and you could add Ediburgh and Dublins theatrical life together and combined would still not match this celtic capital. The Pavillion is one such reason .

    THEATRES: Enchanting Opera house
  • Tip Rating:
  • Home of the National OPera company ,Scottish Opera, and described as the most beautiful opera theatre in the land,it certainly doesn.t look like it from the outside but inside this lavish auditorium has exquisite acoustics .Their own orchestra has seperate concerts at ST.Andrews halls and this season with the acclaimed mainscale opera is back TAlex Reedijk taking over the helm as director general this month serious MAINSCALE opera is back. This season two large productions are in the offing. Carmen directed by Aiden lang and Don Giovanni opens May 2006.However as a venue this opera house stands head and shoulders above most broadway/westend venues and is well worth doing the Saturday guided tour.I saw the RSAMD CO-PRODUCTION OF CENDRILLON with theSaint Petersberg state conservatoire and if these young artists of the future are the future then music is in excellent hands. I was so impressed to see so manyyoung people in the audience .The state conservatoire was also complemented by seniors from Scottish Ballet. Wonderful night, wonderful location. You can email for a free dvd providing an insight to the companies educationalprogramme .E-mail audrey.blake@scottishopera.org.uk

Did not appear to be black tie affair but it was distinctly glamourous

THEATRES: Miniture arts centre in maximum frontage
  • Tip Rating:
  • A little {550 CAP Auditorium} used by an eclectic asortment of performances .It is housed in the ruins of a much older and magnificent building which when flood lit brings arts, science and music together >the front was once the main concerthall of the city which burnt down decades ago.Now it is incorporated into the extension of the main library .The foyer has art exhibitions and a real nice cafe bar.Recently refurbished their can be no nicer smell than a newly cerpeted theatre and reupholstered seats.

    Depends on the performance.

THEATRES: A night at the theatre
  • Tip Rating:
  • I recently went here to see a REALLY funny play and had a great night out! The threatre itself is really lovely inside although not huge. Feels more cosy though :) Worth finding out if there is anything on there when you are visiting

Pretty much anything seems to go with theatre these days. We just wore smart jeans and a nice top. Some people were more dressed up, others less so.

THEATRES: tripple tastes of serious drama
Has expanded from the main rep. company of the city and one of the best reputations of any company in Britain by adding two smaller venues when the building was renovated and expanded. The two smaller auditoriums are more experimental but the piece de la resistance is the magnificent main auditorium.
Their productions go all over the country and indeed the world.
Best thing is that their preview nights ar completely free.
World class theatrical productions for free that is Egalitarianism at its very finest and complements the city's policy of no admission charges to its wonderful art collections.

THEATRES: The oldest churchyard in Glasgow
I have been to see a wonderful play in that church.
I had only been around the church before, as it looks like a delicate gothic building next to a churchyard. A closer look reveals that the ivy covered tombs around it belong to rich merchants.
I later learnt that this is actually the oldest graveyard in Glasgow and, like the Necropolis and the churchyard around the Cathedral, it is worth a visit if you're a freemason symbols hunter.
The inside of the church is beautifully decorated, spacious and bright. The gallery of black and white pictures present an impressive portfolio of the events the theatre has hosted since 1992, and the stained glass windows are said to be some of the most beautiful in the country.
(Drop in in the evening, I don't know if the church/theatre is open during the day)

-Tip: If you stop and have a seat near the bar (lovely colored plexi chairs, by the way), be aware that you are actually sitting on the crypt.

No dress code. Make sure you turn off your mobile.
