Take the A82 out of Glasgow and you will find the beautiful Loch Lomond and further on the impressive mountains of Glencoe. For anyone who likes mountainous scenery and hillwalking this is not to be missed. In the winter it's even possible to do some skiing here (at least sometimes anyway).

Loch Lomond & Ben Lomond. Only about 25 miles from Glasgow. There are several ways to get there car, bus and train. These pictures are taken from the less crowded east side which takes a little more planning to get to than the more popular south side. For more info and pics, see my travelogue.

Defo the most heinous of crimes commited by those travelling to Glasgow would be to not make the half hour trip to loch lomond and stay up there for the night. There is a youth hostel at Rowardennan right at the foot of Ben Lomond which by chance also has small bar along the road 2mins towards Balmaha. Leave a Comment

This page is only marginally about Glasgow and only because it is the starting point for the west highland way trek to Fort William on the West Coast.

this was a road built by the English general Wade in his campaign to defeat Scotland, was then used as a cattle drovers route to the markets of Glasgow and then re-opened as a walking, adventure trail.
My wife and her companion walked 2/3 of the way before
giving up through injury.
This trail winds through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland and is also the only way to reach all of the east coast of Loch Lomond.

Hire a car and see Loch Lomond only 45 minutes in the car! Beautiful scenery....
A few years ago if you´d continued driving past Loch Lomond towards Cambletown and beyond, (where the scenery is remarkable but sometimes very lonelsome) you would have ended up arriving at one of many military bases and the menacing looking guards that watched these complexes made it fairly certain you weren´t going any further!
These days following the end of the cold war it is warming to note that Europe and the world is now somewhat safer but sadly the withdrawal of these troops and closure of these bases has had a negative effect on the small communities.
Many a village has the signs that the shops and small businesses are struggling to survive, it is surprising to see how reliant the communities who campaigned so hardly against the first prescence of NATO bases, have suffered when they´re campaigns were realised.
The former base at Machrihanish has one of the UK´s largest runways it is an extremely odd site in a location so remote and one that brings the oddest thoughts.
I even heard once it was big enough to act as an airstrip for the Space Shuttle and that if necessary the Space Shuttle would be picked up by a converted Jumbo to return it to the US this might not be true but it certainly looks large enough. Leave a Comment
