George Square: Escape the Traffic - in George Square and Look Up!

Away from the traffic, you can look up and admire the beautiful architecture of Glasgow's grand buildings, and nowhere is better to do this than George Square.

Its also got lots of information points (see picture), statues and tourist guides, and seats to rest on. Many times in the year it hosts events (like ice skating in winter).

Once you have found George Square and Sauchiehall Street, you can find your way around the centre faily easily. On its north side is the Queens Street train Station (for trains north and east) and Buchanan Street (leading to the coach station). Most of interest, is south and west of the Square.

    George Square: george square
  • Tip Rating:
  • in the heart of the city, the beautiful george square is a lovely place to sit and rest and watch the crowds walk by. it is also here that you will find the tourist information office, where you can pick up a city map to explore yourself, or book numerous tours from the helpful staff.

the architecture here is grand, with numerous old buildings such as the glasgow city chambers imposing over the beautifully designed square.

A huge square in the centre of Glasgow surrounded by some stunning buildings. Great New Years celebrations take place here, and there is usually something going on in the square all year round.

If I was a football supporter from abroad coming to watch my team play either Glasgow Rangers or Glasgow Celtic this is where I would congregate with my fellow supporters for a sing song, there are loads of bars and resturants on the streets off the square and Merchant City with its host of trendy pubs and eateries is just a stones throw away.

George Sq and the City Hall is a must in Glasgow. The City Hall is a very beautiful building in my opinion. I never entered it (dunno if you're even allowed to) but just watching it is enough.

George Sq is also the place where most tour buses go from.

Included among the stautues are Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert, the ones on horseback.

In the centre of George Square stands the tall monument with Sir Walter Scott overlooking all the other dignatories located around the perimeter.

Moving towards the Cenotaph and then going in a clockwise direction the statues are of Dr Thomas Graham, in the south east corner. Along the south side are Thomas Campbell, Lord Clyde, Robert Burns, Sir John Moore and James Watt, in the south west corner.

On the west side are Prince Albert, husband to Queen Victoria, who is next and in the top left hand corner, the north west corner is Dr Robert Peel.

On the north side there are 2 statues, William E Gladstone and James Oswald.

Where Council for Glasgow City meet and decide Policy and Procedures.

I would suggest pick up a brochure for the Glasgow Bus Tour from the Information Centre on the south side of George Square.

The brochure lists the stops on the bus tour and a little bit more. At each stop it also lists the other places that can be visited from that stop, hence the great idea of Hop On and Hop Offthe bus. You can then visit any or all of the other plaes. For example at City Chambers stop you can also visit the Gallery of Modern Art or Trades Hall or Queen Street station.

By the way the Information Center is a busy place and well worth the visit to pick up info sheets, to book accommodation and to buy a gift of a typical Scottish item to take home with you.

A few short minutes to stroll around the square does not give full justice to the history that unfolds in all those tall plinths with statues on top.

Yet the statues are remote from the people, is the square simply a place to walk, to sit and feel a little freer from the narrow canyons of the streets.
