The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451, by Bishop Turnbull. The names on the gate are of notable alumni over the years and include Lord Kelvin, Joseph Lister and Adam Smith. The second photo shows part of the gates, with some detail shows some of those names. I am indebted to Dedalus54 for giving me the names of both Bishop Turnbull and the famous alumni. At present there are 10,000 students attending the University. Leave a Comment Address: At the University on University Avenue.

The University of Glasgow stands proudly above the city in the west end of the city. The general location is west of the River Kelvin, south of Western Avenue, however the short tour of the original buildings does suggest that the University is now located on both sides of Western Avenue. The second photo shows the general facade of the University as seen from Western Avenue at the main entrance. The view is at the west end of the complex, inside are some of the classrooms. The third photo is a relatively new piece of, can it be called a Sculpture? To commemorate a retired Professor? Photo 4 shows the stained glass window in the chapel on the west side of the main building. The Finla photo shows a deatil of one of the several pews in the chapel. As we visited, the organist was rehearsing for a Television production , technicians were setting the lighting and the sound. Leave a Comment Address: Wetsern Avenue after Kelvin Way.Directions: In the general area of Byers Road and Western Infirmary.

I only saw the University from the tour bus, but what a sight. Glasgow University is one of Britain's oldest universities and well worth a visit, but the campus is HUGE, so be prepared to walk... Leave a Comment

In the next set of photos let us continue to roam the buildings, mostly outside and add some of the views from the south side of the University. Photos 2 and 3 are about the Lion and the Unicorn Staircase, one a description of the stairs and the second of the pair of photos shows the staircase with the the 2 animals flanking the top of the stairs. Some of the colours in the shrubs, still visible in early October. Photo 4. Photo 5 is a view of the east tower from the front of the University building. Leave a Comment Address: South of Western Ave above the River Kelvin.Directions: In general terms betwen Byers Road and Kelvin Way , along Western Avenue.

University of Glasgow - Visit the Hunterian collections and enjoy the beautiful campus. The Quadrangle reminded me so much of the University of Pennsylvania. Leave a Comment

The University of Glasgow dates from 1451 and is the second oldest in Scotland. It moved to it's present site in 1870. It houses the Hunterian Museum which is the oldest public museum in Scotland. The Hunterian Art Gallery, opened in 1980, holds collections of the old masters bequeathed by William Hunter, Scottish and contemporary art, and extensive displays of the work of Whistler. The Mackintosh House is a reconstruction of the Glasgow home of the architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
