Football Fans: Team support
  • Tip Rating:
  • If anyone, old or young, drunk or sober, asks you what football team you support, be very careful! Especially if they ask you which of Glasgow's own football teams you prefer (Rangers and Celtic being the major ones), even if you are familiar with either team, DO NOT EXPRESS A PREFERENCE! It will not engage you with the locals and the question is one of the most common excuses for a fight used by aggressive, neddy types ( who often need no excuse at all). If you have to mention a team, state one from your own country, unless of course you are from England, in which case a reply might aggravate the situation further. You have been warned!

Pictured are two Celtic supporters arriving at Central Station on their way to Ibrox, home ground of Rangers. They are happy. That is because they do not know that in two hours time their firm will have lost two nil to Rangers. Then they will not be happy. They will also be in the company of 50,000 other Celtic supporters, also none of whom are happy.

Soon they will become thirsty. Time for a drink.

Next day the Daily Record documented that the police had arrested twenty five people for "bigotry". Bigotry for gods sake.

"'scuse me sir, yes you in green scarf sir. I have observed you speaking in a manner that indicates you hold a degree of animosity towards those gentlemen in the red coloured jerseys opposite you. I'm afraid I must ask you to accompany me to the station"

Thinking of sectarianism it reminds me of the joke about the man who goes into a Belfast pub

"Hey you" says the barman belligerently, "Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

This is my lucky day, thinks Hymie. " I'm Jewish!" he says.

The bartender thinks for a moment. "Allah be praised, I've got one!"

Football Fans: You're probably best avoiding...
  • Tip Rating:
  • You're probably best avoiding football fans (especially Celtic and Rangers), as they can sometimes be quite violent. Just don't get involved with them and you'll be fine. I've never had any trouble in 20 years....

    Football Fans: Rangers or Celtic?
I feel that previous comments on this subject have exaggerated the problem and are actually quite unhelpful as they only serve to discourage the visitor. It is unlikely that, as a visitor to Glasgow, you will be asked which team you support. I, for one, have never been asked this question and I've lived in the greater Glasgow area for most of my 53 years. I'm a Celtic fan by the way.

Football Fans: Never had any problems
I've been to Glasgow many times to watch my team play Celtic and Rangers and i've never had any problems. I've been able to wear my teams colours on the street, on the subway and in many differant bars and i've always felt very comfortable.

However, like anywhere else there are a minority of people who may try and cause trouble and if you are worried about this don't wear anything that will make you stand out, stay out of silly places that you would avoid in any other city (such as bars you don't like the look of) and be mindful of what your saying when talking about potentialy sensitive issues.

Football Fans: Watch out for football fans
Never ever wear an England top (rugby or football) in Glasgow, it will invite too much attention and some of it might well be negative. If asked who you support never say Celtic or Rangers as you might invite attention from the other side. Best to say Partick Thistle. If you like a quiet life then avoid Glasgow and particularly the underground if it is the weekend of an Old Firm match. Avoid the underground if Rangers are at home as there will be huge queues as the fans use it to get to Ibrox.

Football Fans: FOOTBALL USE COMMEN SENSE
Unlike here in canada i Can wear my rangers jersery to a catholic school which happens to be celtics...Not one person knows what im wearing and half time the time there only remark is why am i wearing a shirt that has "CHEAP" beer on the front..carling.....Know im old enough to know that theres no danger in wearing that in canada however.
If i were going back over to scotland i would trot around in my jersey ..your setting yourself up ...why not be on the safe side and just wear normal clothes.I remeber when i was little seeing all the fans escorted back from the game by big horses with police tahts the first time i realized how sersious it was.Even when i was in endiburgh we went into a celtic shop and my mom had said ranger snd hte look on the girls face was horrible..It all depenends on the person BY THE WAY CELTIC SUCKS
