The Max: The very young crowd
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Max is your typical meat market 20-something nightclub. Lots of young people scantily dressed and shaking around to club favorites.

During my drinking years, I spent a lot of time there shaking my bootie. I can tell you from lots of experience: This place is dark, dingy, dirty and full of sexed-up bar stars. If this is your cup of tea, I would tell you it's a pretty fun time. If you're not into the whole "club scene" but still want to go dancing, I would say to stay away from the Max.

Anything goes... On occasion, nakedness is encouraged.

The Rivers @ Thompsons Hotel & Conference Centre: Always A Happening Place
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Rivers is definetly a spot that every clubber should hit. They play hot songs and the atmosphere is always fun and sexy. A younger crowd with lots of energy.

Everything goes, as little or much as you would like. Wear whatevers comfortable.

    Cactus Jack's: Red Neck Heaven
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cactus Jack's is a great place to feel the cowboy heritage of Kamloops. The music is mainly Country Western, with a few old rock sets mixed in for flavour. The bar often has a great mix of people, young and old, jocks, dance fiends and cowhands. Wednesday nights offer free two-step lessons at 8:00 pm, with an added bonus of paying no cover. Also on Wed. is mechanical bull riding, for all you wannabe cowboys and girls. Saturday nights are the best nights at CJs, especially in the summer. Guy or girl, you'll always find a partner willing to teach you a few fun moves on the dance floor. Drinks are average price, but probably the best bang for your buck is a Texas Tea, CJs version of the Long Island. It usually runs about $7, but comes in a huge carafe, and will last you for a while if you sip slowly. Cover charge most nights is $3 CDN.

Pretty much anything goes. I recommend not wearing open toed shoes (cowboy boots can be deadly for your feet), and ladies, no heels or loose fitting shoes unless you don't plan to dance with a partner for most of the evening. Also, if you have any Western wear, now is the time to drag it out. Cowboy hats are often available for sale at the coat check.

    The Two River Junction buffet...
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Two River Junction buffet and musical (about train robber, Billy Miner) is available to all those who travel on the Rocky Mountaineer. It's a fun night, especially if you're with a large group of people.

    Most people were smart/casual.

There are tons of little cafes where you can chill in the evening in Kamloops. Each has its own distinct feeling.

There is the ubiquitous, trendy Starbucks. There are three in the city; one downtown, one in Sahali and one in Aberdeen at Chapters book store. Starbucks is good if you want your favorite caramel latte or coffee of the day the way you are used to it. There is always good music and it's never too loud.

There is Zacks, a local favorite. Zacks has two locations now. One downtown on the corner of 4th and Victoria. The other is in Sahali in the same mall as WalMart. Zacks is very charming and quiet. Its a great place to chill out, read a newspaper or people watch, particularly the downtown location. My favorite Zacks drink is the hot chai latte. Yummy. A friend told me that since I've been away, Zacks downtown has also aquired the storefront next door and has opened a gelato stand.

The final well-known Kamloops cafe is The Grind. The Grind has been open for about 10 years. It's a popular hang out for artists, musicians and others. The Grind usually has live music a few times a month. Just ask the barrista for what you want. The place has got a very unique charm to it. The cafe is located on the corner of 7th and Victoria.

    Enjoy the coffee!
