The other Kamloops Beaches
Kamloops is a river city, and as a result, we have some pretty good river beaches. Unfortunately, all the locals are quite aware that these exist, and crowd to them regularly. If you're okay with the crowds, ask any local about Riverside and Pioneer Parks. If you want something a little quieter, with lots more space and sun, head to the North Bank of the river. Take the Overlander Bridge (the Blue Bridge) pedestrian path, aka the Rivers Trail. Once you hit the North Shore, you can go towards the shopping area, or you can follow the river. Do the latter, and you will come upon a lovely, sandy, mostly empty beach. The best thing is, on weekends, you can get a good view of how crowded the other beaches are! This beach isn't as close to the amenities as the other beaches, but if you don't mind walking, you can get to a few conveniance stores and coffee shops by taking the other trail off the bridge. It takes about 10-15 mins to get to a 7-11.

Tubing down the Thompson
One of the best activities to beat the heat of the Kamloops summer is tubing the Kamloops river. It is a little accessory intensive, but it will take you all day, and will probably be worth the $10-20 you spend on equipment. You will need: a tube or floatation device (inflatable mats are usually available at supermarkets for cheap in the summer), a floating waterbottle or other drink (I personally recommend coolers), a pair of shoes that can get wet and won't fall off, and lots of sunblock. If you are taking the bus, take the #3 Crosstown to the last stop in Westsyde (behind the shopping center). Head towards the river (about 3-4 blocks). If you have a ride, a good place to start is the end of Dairy Rd., about 15 mins past the Westsyde shopping center. Once you get to the river, blow up your raft, tie your drinks to your leg, slap on the sunscreen and hop in the river. You can float for as long as you like, there are many put out points along the way. This activity is great with a group, as you get to spend most of the time chatting and enjoying the scenery. You'll often see a few people on the shore, and if you wave, you'll often get a wave in return. A few safety points: Always do this activity with a few friends, and remember that despite its slow speed, the river has some very strong undercurrents. As long as you stay with your floating device, and are a decent swimmer, you should have no problems. If you have any doubts about the currents or where you are headed, go to shore. From the river, you can easily walk to the #3 stops.

CF-5 fighter on display at this airport
Near the airport terminal you can see the CF-5A 116740 from 419 Squadron (Canadian Air Forces) mounted on a pedestal.

It wears a great, very colorfoul livery.
