Coombs is a really cool little town north of Nanaimo, about 20 miles or so. There is a general store there that has put the town on the map, so to speak. It's called the Goats on the Roof General Store. The roof on the old store is sod and a family of goats can often be seen on the roof, grazing on the sod. The day we stopped there it was rainy and the goats were all out behind the store, trying to stay dry. :( The General Store is a great place to grab a picnic lunch. They have a bakery on-site that bakes the most amazing breads, pies and pastries. (If you can get one of their chocolate pecan pies - go for it! Delish!) Behind the General Store there are numerous artisan shops where you can find the perfect souvenir of your trip to the Island. This was one of my favorite stops on our vacation.

This marsh has great walking trails around it. This is a great place to relax, feed the ducks and bird watch. There is a lookout tower and benches along the trail. Note that pets are not allowed in the park due to the large number of birds. Check out all my photos. Directions: There are a few points around Buttertubs Marsh where one may park, and a few more for those with a pedestrian approach. From Bowen Road, turn south on Buttertubs Drive, near the Quarterway Pub. From the Harewood side, turn up Bird Sanctuary Drive off Second Street (aka Jingle Pot Rd) and park beside one of a few trailheads along the suburban street. Or park in the lot where Second and Third Streets meet. Leave a Comment
