 | Penticton Flights and Airline Tips | 1 - 10 of 10 | | From Vancouver, the normal way is via the Coquihalla and Okanagan Connector (Hwys 5, 97C). This takes about 3 1/2 hours to Penticton. The old way (Crowsnest Hwy, Hope-Princeton Hwy, or Hwy 3 depending on who you talk to) takes about 4 hours. It is not recommended in the winter, but offers different views. Hwy 5 is mainly alpine, with a short cut through the Nicola Valley and costs $10. Hwy 3 takes you through the barren, rugged Similkemeen Valley before the alpine Hope-Princeton and is free. I like both. The stretch called 3A from Keremeos to Hwy 97 probably has the best scenery. Gas up in Chilliwack - it's usually cheaper than Vancouver or the Okanagan. You can rent these fancy pedal cars on the beach at Penticton. Gillian and I though of renting one to travel through the Okanagan, but keeping up with traffic might be a problem on the steeper hills ;o)) Their chief advantage is they get phenomenal mileage and have no nasty emmissions, unless of course you've been eatina a lot of chili with beans. It was quite convienent to get around in the Apex Village, whether it be for food, equipment rental or getting to the mountain. However, if you live in the condos then it might be a ways walk to the hotels. But if you live in the numerous Inns or hotels it is no problem, everything is within walking distance. The ride from Vancouver up to Apex in Penticton was quite long. The road was also very dangerous if it was snowing hard. We actually got stuck for about 45 min because the road condition was very bad. More pictures from my Apex @ Penticton Trip @ http://www.xanga.com/aclouietravelogue January 7, 2005 Theme: Bus

The S.S.Sicamous was built in 1914 and is the largest remaining stern wheeler that can be seen in western canada. It allows one to see the luxury of almost 100 years ago as the ship sailed the Okanaan lake carrying passengers as well as cargo. The original cost to build was $180,000.00. It remained in service until 1936. In 1949 the City of Penticton bought the ship for $1.00 from the Canadian Pacific Rrailway. She was permanently moored at 1099, Lakeshore Drive west in 1951. I am indebted to the brochure available when you take a self guided tour of the ship, admission is $5.00 per person. Leave a Comment

There were two main decks on the ship, the lower one being for cargo and also the boiler and engine room. The next deck up was for the passengers and the two rooms alreadyshown were on this deck. In between the two saloons was the Dining Room, which looked as ifit could seat 60 people. Alongside the Dining room were cabins and washrooms along one side and the Pantry along the other side. I include this photo to show the size of the engines that thrust the sternwheeler through the water. Steam at 200psi from the boiler at the front of the ship was led to the engines which in turn drove the pistons that turned the stern wheel and thrust the ship along. Leave a Comment

The photo taken in May shows the beach without the big crowds of summer. In the distance is the Casino, located close to the main streets of Penticton. Leave a Comment Directions: Lake City Casinos, at 21 Lakeshore Drive W Kelowna.Website: No web site available.

This staircase allowed access form the sallon deck to the Upper or gallery Deck and was in the passenger area of the ship. No need for them to go below, except to leave the ship. Leave a Comment

The view includes waht look like the smoke stack of the originally coal fired Boilers. In the distance can be seen the sandy cliffs that are part of the landscape in the valley. The main road from Kelowna to Penticton runs below the cliffs. Leave a Comment
