The Georgia Straight is Vancouver's weekly arts & entertainment newspaper. It's free and comes out every Thursday. You can find it practically everywhere in Vancouver and all the way out into the suburbs. The newspaper itself is rather large and contains the best concert listings, club listings, restaurant listings, theatre listings, art gallery listings, and generally any event listing in the city.
But the Georgia Straight isn't just all concert listings, classifieds, and advertising. It proudly markets itself as one of the few completely independent newspapers in Canada. As a result, they tend to have a lot of unique articles pertaining to a wide variety of issues (politics, environmental issues, human rights, etc). The letters to the editor can also be rather amusing. I find that if you read the Georgia Straight cover to cover, you'll have a pretty good idea about what Vancouver's all about.
And for some Georgia Straight trivia, Bob Geldof used to be a writer for the Georgia Straight before he started the Boomtown Rats and Live Aid. The Georgia Straight has been a fixture in Vancouver since the late 60's. The name of the newspaper is a pun on the Strait of Georgia (the large body of water that separates Vancouver and the rest of the BC mainland from Vancouver Island). Leave a Comment

The Georgia Straight is a free newspaper (website) which has a very good concert listing. From smaller club shows to the big acts, find out whos playing when your in town by picking one up at a convience store or from one of the many newspaper boxes around town (its free) Leave a Comment

Pick up this free newspaper that is chalk-full of information. It contains movie listings and times, club listings, concerts, plays, restaurants, you name it!
It is usually in a newspaper box near the regular newspapers all around Vancouver and....it's FREE!!!
You can also plan your events and nightlife ahead if you are not yet in Vancouver by checking out their website.

Looking for something to do in Vancouver? Pick up a Georgia Straight paper. Free in boxes all over the place, the Straight always has what's going on around town. Particularly good for finding fringe events, it's got it all.
Who's playing at what nightclub, what night is 'Disco Night' at the Commodore (Wednesday?), and on and on.
Also always has entertaining reviews and commentaries. Check out the 'Savage Love' column for off-the wall romantic advice. Leave a Comment
