The Sea to Sky Higway (Highway 99 North) is a very scenic highway which starts at Horseshoe Bay in Vancouver and leads up to Whistler and beyond. Along the way you get some wonderful views as you drive along the inlets of the ocean and then drive into the beautiful mountain scenery.

Along the way there are some viewpoints, stop at them when you go to Whistler or when you come back. These viewpoints are defintely worth to stop at...especially the Shannon Falls or the Brandywine Falls and so much more.

The Shannon Falls are located along Highway 99 (Sea To Sky Highway) about 40-45 min. north of Vancouver. The 1100ft/335m falls is the 3rd highest in the province. This is a great place to have a picnic also.

Look for the signs along the Highway...it's on your right hand side when you come from Vancouver. These falls are lovely and there are different walking trails around here.

The beautiful Brandywine Falls shouldn't be missed when you go to Whistler. If you are coming from Vancouver it's just before you get to Whistler...you'll see the sign for Brandywine Falls Provincial Park.

A short walking trail from the parking lot at Brandywine Falls Provincial Park leads to an observation platform at the top of the falls. The spectacular 70m/230ft waterfall is best seen from this viewpoint, which also presents some marvelous views of Daisy Lake and the surrounding mountains.

This Mining Museum is located about 10 minutes south of Squamish along Highway 99. The BC Mining site was build in 1905 and in full operation. It was the biggest copper mine in BC. Over the years Britannia Beach and the mine would encounter a number of serious disasters. So, in 1974 they shut down this mine permanently.

The BC Museum of Mining was first opened to the public in 1975 and in 1988 was declared a National Historic Site. It has also become a popular location for the filming of TV series' and movies alike. Different areas of the mine and Britannia Beach can be seen in a number of the x- files episodes So once again, yet in a different light the mine lives on.

This wonderful Provincial Park is located in southwestern British Columbia near Vancouver and Whistler. It's a very frequently visited Provincial Park with about 480,000 acres to explore. In this park you'll find volcanic peaks, alpine meadows, wonderful lakes and wildlife.

This park is one of Canada's most accessible and spectacular wilderness park and has five main recreational areas: Diamond Head, Black Tusk, Cheakamus Lake, Singing Pass and Wedgemount Lake...these are all located in the western portion of the park.

You can reach this park about 1 1/2 to 2 hours north of Vancouver in the Squamish-Whistler area along Highway 99 North (Sea To Sky Highway).

  • I went looking for bears on some trails around Whistler. Could only find bear tracks in the snow. This picture was taken on the Rainbow Lake Trail. Yeah, I can tell the difference between dog and bear tracks...I hope. If you're foolish enough (like me) to go looking for bears and need survival tips or just want more bear info, check out the websites.

    Rainbow Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Rainbow Falls is near the beginning of the Rainbow Lake Trail which can be found near the cemetery on Alta Lake Road...not too far from Alta Lake and the HI hostel. Rainbow Falls was a nice little spot, and, best of all, there was nobody around...I had the place to myself. Had to hike up a twisting road for a while to reach the falls, and I also had just scene some bear tracks in the area...so that made the hike a little more interesting. Anyway...the falls are very scenic but not too big - it was worth the trip though. Further up the trail it was snowbound or else I would have gone on. The tourist center hands out maps of Whistler that will give directions to the trail.

    Brandywine Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Brandywine Falls Provincial Park is a very well known attraction in British Columbia most likely because it is about 13 km (8 mi) south of Whistler. The waterfall is quite impressive though and it deserves its reputation. It is a 66 m (216 ft) drop from the crest of the falls to the canyon below. Brandywine Creek then flows a short distance into Daisy Lake.
One significant disclaimer would be that the falls will be fairly difficult to reach in the winter months. The parking area and trail are not groomed and the snow pack in the area can become quite substantial.

    Directions:
Traveling South along Highway 99 from Whistler, go 13 km (8 mi) and follow the Provincial park signs.

Most people who visit Whistler-Blackcomb never leave the village or the ski hills. But more adventurous folks take advantage of the incredible hiking Southwest B.C. offers.

One popular hike is to Black Tusk, near the north end of Garibaldi Lake.

Take a look at my Black Tusk travelogue to get more details.
