    We rented a car in Mexico City and drove to San Miguel de Allende. As I recall, it took us about 3 hours. The hardest part was getting out of Mexico City. Once we were out of the city, the drive was a breeze.

    When you get to San Miguel, just park your car and don't use it again until you are ready to leave, unless you are visiting the countryside. The trafffic is too congested in the city to do any car sightseeing.

  • When you land at the Leon (BJX) airport, you could get one of many shuttle vans to drive you to San Miguel, but for nearly the same cost, just email Javier Karabasz (lkarabasz@hotmail.com) your plans- include airline, flight number and time of your approx. arrival. He will be there waiting for you with a sign that has your name on it. No waiting to fill the van, waiting for other customers. He will put the luggage in the trunk and you will ride comfortably in the car back to San Miguel. He speaks fluent English and loves to talk! Very very nice man. Next time I return to San Miguel (May 2005), I will take a picture of him next to his car.

    Once you are in San Miguel de Allende, you don't need a car to rent to get places around the town. Just about everywhere you walk, you will see these small green taxi cars. Just hail one down and for about 20 pesos (or $2), you can be driven back to your hotel after a long day of shopping or wherever you need to go. The drivers are nice and very helpful.

  • Bring really good walking shoes because of the cobblestone streets. Taking a taxi is cheap and the drivers are helpful and know the town.
