Veracruz is a merchandise port so cruise ships pass by in the distance, heading for Cancun. But while I was living there, Hurricane Wilma prevented cruise ships from docking at Cancun and the City Authorities welcomed a few ships in Veracruz Puerto.
Since the city doesn't get that many foreign tourists, these ships were quite an event for the local Portenos. Students ran to the port at their lunch break and tried their English, German or 'bonjour mademoiselle' on anyone that looked different -- namely, me. They were disappointed to learn that I had NOT just come off the Mona Lisa and that I didn't speak English. Well, I do but I didn't want to.

    Maritime Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • I was surprised how big and interesting this museum was. Telling a lot about seafaring history with little landscapes and boats from all parts of the world and all different cultures, also giving a lot of information on Mexican history, Christopher Columbus and all that. I should have stolen the nice cap that was lying around, but I didn’t even have my picture taken. Nice building also, and entrance is free!!

    Cortez landing
  • Tip Rating:
  • Antigua, Veracruz, is the little town where Cortez first landed. The little town is just north of Veracruz and has the remnants of Cortez first house as well as the little chapel that he built when he first arrived. There is also a small complany that runs boats you can hire and they will take you to where Cortez first came in and where his ships landed (supposedly?)

    Cortez home
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the remnants of the first home built by Cortez when he arrived in the new world. He actually lived here for about 1 year before making his trek into the interior of Mexico and eventually defeating the Aztecs.
