An average stadium in the middle of a heavy industrial area, the Oakland Coliseum (or McAfee Coliseum if you prefer the formal name) is kind of stuck out in the middle of nowhere, certainly not the trend for new stadiums such as PNC Park, Camden Yards, and Minute Maid Park, which were all built in the downtown area to help revitalize that area of the city. This stadium is home to both the Oakland A's and Oakland Raiders, another reason why it isn't perfect for either sport.

I went to see the A's play the White Sox on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and I bought a $20 ticket on the street for just $10. The stadium was not too full, and not all of the vendors were open, meaning long lines early in the game. Single game ticket prices range from $10 to $40

You can access the stadium easily via BART at the Coliseum/Airport station.

The A's announced in November 2006 they are moving about 15 miles outside of the city to Fremont in the coming years. This will certainly be a step up as they could use a new stadium!

I attended the Raiders vs Steelers game at the Oakland (McAfee) Coliseum on 29 October 2006 as the evil Raiders beat the peace-loving Steelers 20-13.

Cheap seats list at $36 each, but I got two for $12 on EBay (plus $20 shipping), so it was a pretty cheap football game. My seats were way up high on the third level of the newer eastern section of the stadium...this section rises about 75 feet above the rest of the stadium, so from here you can see the Bay, San Francisco, and the Bay Bridge in the distance (until the fog rolled in around halftime). The breeze is also pretty strong up here, so bring a jacket if the temps are cool. Since this is the east side of the stadium, also bring sunglasses as the setting sun will be in your eyes.

The Oakland Coliseum BART station is just a few hundred yards from the east side of the stadium across a 15-20 foot wide overpass covered in chain link, barbwire, and concertina wire like a prison corridor (probably necessary in a place like Oakland). The route is well marked, and during the hour before the game well traveled...just follow the crowd. Then again, the stadium towers over the BART station so if you can't figure out how to get there you must be from Cleveland. After the game, about 30,000 people head this direction to catch the train, the BART, or get to the east parking areas...you can imagine the traffic jam as everyone squeezes into this narrow passage. In the BART station you have the same problem as thousands of people try to squeeze onto a little train. Think they have extra trains for games? Nah! Luckily everyone is heading for downtown or San Fran, not Fremont, so the train south to my car was pretty much empty.

Tickets to a Raiders home game are $26 to $151 for a single seat.

  • Directions: I drove up from the south via I-880 & parked at the Fremont BART station. It is close to the highway on a well-marked route, parking is free ($20 at the stadium), & round trip tickets are $6.40. This is the end of the line--all trains go to the Coliseum.

If you're in Oakland between April and September, go catch an Oakland A's home game at the Oakland Coliseum. They are only scheduled to be in Oakland for a few more years, as the plan is to move the A's to a new stadium 20 minutes south in Fremont (my hometown). You can get seats pretty cheap (about $10 for bleacher seats). For more expensive tickets, it's about $35 for MVP infield seats, and about $150 for diamond club (right behind home plate with free food and drinks - 2 free alcoholic beverages). This is an activity that's fun for the whole family, or just for a couple of adults.

The most convenient transportation option is to take the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) train to the Oakland Coliseum station. From the station there is an elevated walkway over to the Coliseum. Before and after games there are people selling cheap ($5) hats and shirts on the walkway. If you decide to drive to the game, parking is about $15 per car, so try to carpool if possible. If you get there early enough, maybe 3 hours early or so, they will not have started charging to enter the parking lot yet. So you can park for free if you arrive super early, just remember to bring enough tailgating supplies to last you until game time!
