A short 35 minute drive though the prairie northeast of Abilene to colorful Albany, TX, you will discover a gem of a museum, The Old Jail Art Center. This small, but very sophisticated, museum has an extensive permanent collection of well known artists and pre-Colombian and Chinese tomb figures, as well as touring exhibits that beat anything you will find anywhere in Texas west of Fort Worth. The OJAC is open Tues-Sun, 10-5 (2:00pm on Sunday) and admission is free. Leave a Comment

An amazing array of every chocolate imaginable in every box set ever created. Every season, theme, even reserve chocolate is available at this outlet. Right off I-20, it's a stop not to be missed.

Everyone talks about Abilene being such a "churchy" town. True, we do have a lot of churches. This allows us to enjoy some architectual landmarks that other towns this size may not have. However, these are really never mentioned in any travel literature I have seen. For the sheer beauty of the building and the grounds, visitors will appreciate the Church of the Heavenly Rest (at South 6th and Meander - which is just off Sayles Blvd). Just down the road (take S 7th east a few blocks to 8th & Jeanette) is the Sacred Heart church, also beautiful. Leave a Comment

Ft. Phantom. This is the ruins of a 150 year old frontier fort. It has been said that ghost roam the ruins at night. I've never seen any, but I've only been there once for a very short time at night. It is located 10 miles north of Abilene on FM 600. It has been preserved as an historical site, by a private entity, and is complete with signs and markers telling the history and points of interest in and around the ruins.

If you want easy access to food, shopping, hotels, and even a workout facility, all within 1 sq. mi. of each other, than look no further than Buffalo Gap Road. You can literally eat, then shop, and then go back to your hotel, all without using your car. That's saying something in West Texas. Leave a Comment

It's been a while since I have taken my son here, so since he is older, decided to stop by and visit again. My son was just amazed at the history and to walk along the ruins of this fort made him picture what it was like way back then. Taken from the brochure, some history: " A rustic romance and a hint of mystery still cling to more than a dozen tall stone chimneys which tower over Fort Phantom Hill near Abilene. Like the soldiers who once guarded this parched patch of West Texas soil, the lonely chimneys stand over the rugged beauty of native cacti, wildflowers and mesquite trees. The chimneys are a rock reminder of the colorful early days of Texas history, when Native Americans from the Comanche tribe still roamed the area, and U.S. Infantry troops struggled to create an outpost to protect the westward-moving frontier of Texas settlement." It is not to be missed. Be warned though, there are sticker bushes out there that are painful, along with a very uneven terrain, but a scooter or wheelchair can get through the main path and from there landmarks are a short walk, but it's difficult.

On the campus of Abilene Christian University is one of the most amazing communal sculptures ever seen (and I have been all over the world). It is on the east-central side of the campus and is titled Jacob's Dream. Taken from the story of Jacob's Ladder, angels fight their way up the ladder into heaven. There are stones all around with a waterfall to act as a reflecting pool in front of the sculpture. It is designed for which ever way the sun is shining down to pass through the wings of the angels and cast a shadow on a proverb in one of the stones. It is truly amazing.
