 | Abilene Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 11 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (11) Abilene has roughly 400,000 churches, which is odd because we only have 100,000 people living here, so we have actually four churches per person its the biggest ratio in the world. But honestly theres so many churches here, i would prefer fewer actually because theres just so many. but its fun to go and get some lessons on God and shake hands with some people. GREAT CULTURAL EXPERIENCE!!!! Address: pretty much literally everywhereDirections: one every 5 acres

Abilene is the home of a wonderful drive-in movie theater. Now I had not been to a drive-in since first grade and my husband had never been to one, so we were not sure what to expect. Can you really get interested in a movie watching it through your windshield? The answer is a definate yes. The sound plays through your car speakers, so you have your own personal surround sound. The Town and Country Drive In is open year round. When we watched Pirates of the Caribbean there this summer, I thought "This is the ultimate summer experience". Some people bring lawn chairs and enjoy the perfect weather sitting beside their cars. Others lay in the back of their pickups or pop up the back door of their SUV to enjoy the film. We rolled our windows down and enjoyed the breeze in our car. (No usher will ever frown at you for putting your feet up on your own dash). However, when we went to see the Return of the King on one of the coldest nights of the year, I decided maybe the Town and Country Drive In is also "the ultimate winter experience". We brought our blankets and pillows and snuggled up during the movie. Cozy. The movie is priced low, and even lower for children. One price for two movies. For the schedule at the Town and Country Drive In check out their website at : www.towncountrydrivein.com Leave a Comment Address: North Mockingbird and Vogel at 2902 Vogel AvePhone: (325) 677-9899Directions: North Side of AbileneWebsite: www.towncountrydrivein.com

The base has an Aeronautics Museum (Outdoors), featuring Airforce planes of past and present. If you call ahead, you may be able to schedule a tour of one of the simulators, and see what it is like to actually fly one of the modern AF jets. Directions: Main Entrance is on Arnold Blvd. in West Abilene. There are signs directing you to the base on all the major highways.

The historic Texas And Pacific (T&P) depot is interesting to go look at. There is a plaque that describes how the T&P helped build up Abilene and the area economically, Leave a Comment Directions: A block East of the Visitors Center.

Whether you are passing through town or passing a few days here, try to spend some time in Abilene's downtown area. (From I20, exit Pine and this will take you straight into downtown). This area is clean, safe, and holds some interesting restaurants and bakeries, several museums, and our beloved Paramount Theater: http://www.paramount-abilene.org/ The Paramount is a beautifully restored cinema on Cypress Street. Featured there are Art Films (from Frida to Central Station), Classics (think Hepburn and Stewart), and a few hand selected, well-deserving Blockbusters (like Lord of the Rings, Chicago). The price of tickets is lower than anything you would pay at a modern multi-screen theater. Popcorn is even cheap! And before the film begins, movie aficionado Robert Holliday welcomes you warmly and shares some trivia about the directors, actors, and music related to the film. When the lights dim, look up and you will see stars twinkling and clouds drifting across the "sky" above. Then enjoy as the movie plays across the giant screen in front of you. Also downtown, you will find a smatterting of restaurants and cafes. Several of these feature live local talent. The Americana group "Jamison Priest" is my favorite - often featured at the Abilene Coffee Company on Pine. Movie lovers will not want to miss "Bogie's" on Cypress Street - a sandwich shop dedicated to Humphrey Bogart, with all the menu items named after his films. (I recommend the "African Queen"). The Abilene Bookstore on Cypress will make you fall in love with books all over again. Abilene will surprise you with its Museums - including the Grace Museum, the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, the Center for Contemporary Arts, and the 12th Armored Division Military Museum. For those of us with special weaknesses - don't miss Vleta's Candies on N. 1st . The Leaf on Cypress is an interesting cigar shop. We also have a first-rate Philharmonic Orchestra, along with other musical organizations. Leave a Comment Address: Cypress Street, Pine Street, and areaDirections: Downtown (off North First) or Exit Pine from I-20.Website: www.abilene.com

for a great cultural experience go to wal mart, they sell things its like a market place, some people just go to wal mart and wander around for hours, not cuz they want to, but because they are lost and cant find there way out.

i used to have a pear tree in my front yard, and me and my cronies would gather them up and dump them on girls porches as a primitive way of flirting, it didnt work though and they later got violent and threw them on my porch, it stunk.
