 | El Paso Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 39 | | Popular Restaurants | Other Restaurants Tips | All Tips (39) Good authentic tacos are about as good a fast food as one can eat. Alberto's was a needed stop after several hours coming from Tucson, and given the distance required to get to San Antonio. So fast food in El Paso was all we had time for. We took the downtown exit and drove around one-way streets until I spotted this place. It didn't look to be as much of a dive as some other places we had passed. This restaurant is also a sit down place (see photo), and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner food. One could place the order by cell phone and pick up on the way through. Open daily 7:30-4pm. They have free delivery in the downtown area, so if you are staying in an El Paso Hotel downtown, give them a call.
The tacos. Handmade corn torilla, shredded beef, and plenty of fresh tomatoes and lettuce. This was not Taco Bell! And, yet the price was about the same, $15- for two people. I had a chance to drink Horchata and practice my Spanish, but the college student behind the cash register taking orders wanted to converse in English. He was interested in where I was coming from. He told me the the distance from Los Angeles to El Paso is about the same as from El Paso to Houston. Texas is a big state! I was surprised to find this elegant and old cafe and restaurant (eclectic cuisine) in ugly high rise building in downtown El Paso (see my pictures) next to Plaza Hotel. It is rather fancy place although both business and casual dress is OK there. Its interior design is a mix of both almost 90 years old tradition and art and modern amenities. Prices although not low are not crazy high. Expect to pay some $30-$50 per person per full lunch or dinner with drinks, tax and tip. Cafe Central was opened in 1918 in Juarez, Mexico, and after prohibition ended, it migrated closer to the border, and finally crossed into downtown El Paso. In 1991, the restaurant was re-opened after re-modelling and restoration.
Try their cafe and delicious desserts (each costs $7). We had dessert platter for $14 which included: Creme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse Tower with Caramel Sauce, Classic Baklava & Chocolate Dipped Strawberries. Everything was great. I like especially Chocolate Mousse Tower, yummy... Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehousePrice: US$31-40 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: 109 N. Chihuahua Charlie's This grill and bar on the other side of the border is a landmark for residents and tourists alike. Chihuahua Charlie's is a fun place in Juarez, Mexico, to eat or to have a few drinks. Once you've been there, you always want to go back. The waiters are energetic, the atmosphere is bright, and the menu and walls poke fun at the staff and customers. Mexican food, seafood, salads, steaks, etc.--you name it, they have it, and they prepare it right. Open seven days a week from breakfast until late in the evening with live music on Sat. and Sun. I'm not much of a restaurant eater. Fast food is the norm most times. So my favorite is 'Peter Piper Pizza'. Always special deals and has gaming for kids to keep busy.

If you think of Texas, you think of beef. However, if you think of El Paso, you have to think of Mexican as well. So I have two restaurants - a steak house and a Mexican restaurant. The Cattle Baron is a nice mid-market steak house. And Marie's Pastries & Bake is a small Mexican Restaurant. The Cattle Baron is relatively inexpensive for what you get (compared with like restaurants in the US). They have an warm atmosphere which is similar to an old west cattle baron's house. Marie's is a low cost fair who regularly has soliders from Fort Bliss eating their for lunch so arrive early. There's not much I can say about the atmosphere as you're not paying for it - just the food.
The Cattle Baron (as the name implies) does beef and they do beef well. However, they also have a massive salad bar and the selection was impressive. You can't go wrong with any of their entries because they all include either a Ceaser salad or the salad bar. Their salad bar has everything from stawberries and cream to fresh peppers. As for Marie's, you'll find real Mexican food on the menu - nothing like Taco Bell. I had their $4 lunch special which includes a little of everything and its all you can eat. Just watch that green salsa - its HOT! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: The Cattle Baron is located by the airport at 1700 Airway Blvd, El Paso - next to the El Paso Marriott. This really hard as there are so many types of food, Mexican; Tex-Mex and New Mexico style, German, Italian, Chinese, Steak, and more. State Line which serves steak, Bar-b-que and some Mexican is great. There is a small out of the way authenic 'whole-n-the-wall' type place called Mundo's which is very good. the price is medium low but it is as close to the neighborhood mom and pop places that I have found. It is family run and a favorite of locals. it has msotly 'salsa music' and tile floors. This is not a fine dining experience but a good idea of what the tradional daily Mexican food realy is.

Jaxon's is a local El Paso microbrewery with three locations in the city. We tried the Remcon Circle restaurant which is the newest of the three. The beer was good and not too expensive at $2.95 for 16 ounces. I had a brown ale and dad had a Mexican-style lager. For dinner dad enjoyed the pecan-soy salmon ($11.50) and cheese cake ($5.25), while I stuck with the local enchiladas with green sauce ($7.50). This is a nice clean restaurant, but their decor was a little distracting--big pallets of barley or something setting out in the restaurant like their warehouse was full. I think it was intentional as part of their theme, but it looked rather odd. This is more of a family restaurant than any other brewery I have ever visited...kids were in abundance. There are TV throughout the restaurant, making it relatively easy to catch a game here. Leave a Comment
