  • I have yet to figure out exactly why locals think visitors to our city would be interested in going to a shopping mall. The Galleria is a three story monster that caters primarily to those in Houston who can afford to drop $500 on a blouse. The mall does have many department stores and an indoor ice rink but the horrific parking and the snobbery of it's patrons make the Galleria a place to avoid. If you feel a need to iceskate in Houston go to the rink downtown and if you absolutely need to do your shopping in a mall you don't have to go to the Galleria, Houston has a hundred malls all over town.

In my opinion the best mall in Houston is Memorial City Mall. The size and layout of the mall make it easy to get your shopping done without feeling like you've just ran a marathon through a maze. The Mall offers everything the average consumer wants without the elitist attitude.

The Galleria area is the expensive shopping district of Houston. It has nothing to offer to the tourist that does not exist anywhere else in american cities. The shops are expensive. The area is not particularly looking good. Saturday is a mayhem.

If you like shopping, that's the place to go (go see my Shopping tips for details). But again, nothing typical of Houston or original in any ways!!

Well if you are in the Galleria area, go see the huge "water fall" (the Transco fountain) on Post Oak boulevard, just South of the Galleria, it is very impressive (see my Off the Beaten Path tips)! Admire the Williams Tower, the single sky-craper in this part of Houston, glass-covered, which is boosted to be the tallest tower outside an urban core in North America (64 stories)... There is an observation deck on the 51th floor.

  • The Galleria area is a shoppers haven. IF, and a big if, you have $$$Lots of money$$$. The galleria itself is pretty cool. The ice rink is the main reason. This is about the only place you can ice skate for a thousand miles, so take advantage.

  • Tip Rating:
  • Avoid the Galleria unless you are coming to Houston to shop. I am not just referring to the mall, but the entire part of the city known as the Galleria Area. Just avoid it, because all it has to offer is comercialized crap that you can get anywhere.

Galleria: It really isn't a trap!
This really isn't a tourist trap. It is a very large mall, that is catered for a wide range of customers, but particularly for the upper crust. Shops included Neiman Marcus, Louis Vuitton, and department stores Macy, Foley's and etc.

Even if you find it too expensive, it is a good place to go window shopping because of the large varietys offered at the Galleria.
