We did a full day kayaking trip with Outdoor Odysseys. We chose them due to the slightly longer time on the water plus they provided lunch. Our guide was professional with her instructions and was genuinely enthused when describing the wildlife on the islands. The lunch was nothing very fancy, fresh fruit, peanut butter/jelly, bagels, hummous. So if that is not your cup of tea I would guess that using another tour provider and bringing your own lunch may be preferable.

We did see Orcas and Eagles as well as some other shore birds like oyster catchers. Be prepared to not see Orcas though. Our guide warned us that only about half of the day trips actually get to see the pods.

The price was approx 70 per person. The others companies were approx 60-65 per person but remember to bring lunch and you will be out on the water a little less time.

Per our guide she seemed to think tours with 4-6 people seemed to go better than groups with 8-12. This usually due to differences in fitness and paddling skills.

Go to the west side of the island, to Limekiln State Park. There are many free maps of the island in town, but the ones from Coldwell Banker's real estate office are the best.
Park in the parking lot and walk down one of the trails to the shore.
Look for orca whales, porpoises, seals and/or bald eagles. Keep your eyes open for large clusters of boats. If you see such a cluster, there are probably whales not too far away!
As you sit on the shore, the large island you see across the strait is Vancouver Island. The city to the left is Victoria, and the one to the slight right is Sydney. Off to your far left is the Olympic Peninsula.
    Sunsets are great here also!

  • Directions: Just keep driving. It's an island -- you'll get there eventually! (Just kidding -- just look at the map, it's easy.)

Whale watching from Lime Kiln State Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • This park had changed since I was last here 9 years ago. They have put in some more modern facilities and have trails to the "Lime Kiln" portion of the park. However the part I do remember was going down to the Lighthouse and seeing if the Orcas would swim by.

If you have the time pack a lunch or dinner and just sit out there. The orcas might swim by at anytime. Due to the currents and the depth of the water they often come fairly close to shore. Even if the whales don't stop by it's a nice view and a relaxing place to sit and just chill. We were unlucky and did not see any the day we were there 2-4PM but others who were there in the evening did see them.

There are researchers by the Lighthouse that monitor the Orcas. If they aren't busy you may be able to chat with them a little.

The American Camp is a National Historic site, where the US troops camped for 12 years during the Great Pig War. (See Travelog for more detail). A small visitor center exists that has a few artifacts and explanations of the place. There are several miles of trails and a short walk(1/2 mile or so) around the actual camp. Only one building is left at this camp. The hiking can take you down to Grandma's Cove if you like tide pooling or you can walk in the prairie like meadows that surround the camp.

On the Northside of the island is the English Camp that is counterpoint to the American Camp. This camp has more buildings and a different feel to the area. The English camp is more wooded. You can hike to the top of Mt. Young to get a view of the surrounding area. There is a movie at the English camp that explains what life was like at English camp for the 12 odd years.

    Susie's Mopeds
  • Tip Rating:
  • She has mopeds, scootcars and Geo Trackers that you can rent right when you get off the ferry. Her staff is exceptional and they will customize a trip for you around the island. They even provide coolers for snacks!

Her webpage is a great starting place for your search about the island. She has a virtual tour in there!

    Whale Excursion
"Sit right back and I'll tell you of a fateful trip we took. A three hour tour!" That's how the television show 'Gilligan's Island' started each week in the 70's. This too was a three hour tour to see whales. The Captain tried, but they can't guarentee it. Instead we saw seals and otters, but no whales. In spite of that we had a great time out on Puget Sound, or at least Haro Straits, if not actually the sound. The air was fresh, the breeze was stiff the cabin warm and the upper deck had a view over miles of salt water.

Coming and going the point of land that marked the edge of safe water was Cattle Point Light. It's the southern tip of San Juan Island. It got it's name when a ship carrying live cattle lost a large number over the side in rought water. All but 1 or 2 made it to land on this point. It's been Cattle Point ever since.
