Big Top Chetaqua
An old fashioned tent show, with a real tent. Canvas roof and walls, this place has limited seating but brings in some big names. My wife and I saw Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Garrison Keillor (sp?). The house band is made up of true professionals, very good. An experience from the old days, in modern time. Some house shows, many written and directed by Warren Nelson of the Lost Nation String Band. Very entertaining, real folks, good music, in fact you will have a good time if you want to or not. And after the show, or even during it, you can talk to the performers. They are real people, very good at what they do, but not the type to rush off into a trailer after the show. I recommend the show 'Keeper of the Light'. History of the Grea Lakes lighthouses, it's captivating. A combination of music, slide show, live performance...Much humor, much history...beautiful. And I have no vested interested, not a member, just loved the shows.

    Maxwell Street Days, Bay Days,...
Maxwell Street Days, Bay Days, Big Top Chetauqua, the Apostle Islands, Bayfield, Bad River Indian Reservation, the Historical Museum, Northland College, Whistle Stop, and of course the lake 'Lake Superior'. You've got to see the Visitor Center. It's one of the most beautiful centers I've ever seen.
summer activities where it's like a giant flea market with carnivals, bands, food, all kinds of merchandise and just so much fun with all the different entertainment offered and sales on merchandise are unbelievable.

  • Directions: Downtown Ashland, in the heart of Main Street and LakeShore Drive. The visitor center is off US Hwy 2 West.
  • Other Contact: You can call the Ashland Chamber

The Upper Great Lakes Visitors Centers is just to the west of Ashland on US 2. It is a comprehensive travel, tourism, and environmental resource for the northwoods and the general region of Lake Superior and northern Lake Michigan. Open from 9 to 5 daily, the center contains both permanent and temporary exhibits, some historical, some ecological. The center is staffed with personnel who can help with everything from lodging and restaurants to the location of campsites and the possibility of renting sailboats, ATVs and snowmobiles.

There's also an explanatory "Nature Walk" through a reconstructed wetland that illustrates the importance of wet environments in the great north.

    Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center
Want a quick view of what northern Wisconsin has to offer? The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is run by all the agencies that have public lands up north. Apostle Island National Lakeshore of the National Park Service, the US Forest Service, Wisconsin State Forests, Bureau of Land Management, are all here. Open year round, it's a great place to start.

  • Directions: west of Ashland at the junction of State Route 13 (to Bayfield) and US 2.

    Winter in Wisconsin
Winter makes Ashland a unique place. Instead of blue water stretching northward, there is a snow white field. Far in the distance, towards the lighthouse, you can just see the dots of small houses. Winter is Ice fishing time.
