In those days we were not so accustomed to foreign food, even though we had journeyed through Europe the year before. So long ago I can't remember the food, think it was Goulash. Except for the 'Baked Alaska' whick looked wonderful but when it was cut into, it was like eating 'Sawdust !' Couldn't give it away.! Nearly every day, someone would have a birthday, so a bottle of wine & a birthday cake was given to the lucky person. You can't miss this place if you go to the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego : it's the only "bar/restaurant" here and it's a very nice place, though a little bit expensive (but, if you're hungry or thirsty, you will have no choice !). You will enjoy good coffee and tasty pastries, next to a heating that will remind you of grandpa and grandma... And... as Ushuaia is supposed to be the most southern city of the world... this is the last bar of the world ! When you're on an island, the seafood has to be good, right? Right! We asked the locals and they said that Tia Elvira's was the best place to get it. Certainly, it is a good place for seafood and has a fine view of the cruise ships loading up on the Beagle Channel. While the food was good, it wasn't great. I've eaten better seafood in Lima, Seoul and Baltimore. However, being that we were at the end of the earth, good but not great should be fine. I'm sure you could do worse. Warning: at about 8:30, the restaurant starts to fill up, mainly with tourists. Apparently we weren't the only visitors to whom the locals recommended Tia Elvira.
I recommend getting something stuffed with crab, since the long-legged crabs here are the local specialty. Of course, you could just order crab, but I'm too lazy to deal with cracking open the shells to bother with that. Remember, it has a water view (though it is not on the harbor side of the street).
