Ipanema Beach, in the summer, is the best 5 miles of beach in the world. If you want a really great perspective on Ipanema Beach, and the traditions surrounding Carioca beach culture, purchase the book "How to Be Carioca" available on Amazon, Bookstores, or buy it here at any bookstore in Rio. The beach is a large part of Rio's culture, and everything revolves around it. Ipanema is the true "Praia" culture. In the book, it says "a Carioca is someone who goes to the beach before, after, or instead of work", this is an accurate analogy. "Where do you go to the beach" is one of the first questions a Carioca will ask when meeting someone for the first time. Take care your first few days and use plenty of sunscreen, the ultra-violet rays here can easily ruin a vacation. Brazilian women will wear the famous "dental floss" bikinis, all ages, and sizes, so don't feel shy, go like a local. And the males, well what you may call speedos, or tourists tightes, are called "sungas" here, and they are the proper beach wear, again, all ages and sizes, if you wear anything other, you will be immediatly identified as a tourist. Cariocas do not take a beach towel to the beach. Women sit or lay on their tangas, men sit on their t-shirts or the sand. It is acceptable, for a small fee to rent beach chairs or umbrellas from the local barracas. Drink plenty of water, beers are cheap, but stay away from drinking caparinhas on the beach, the cacacha can be deadly in the sun to "rookies", and if you spill the lime juice on your skin, the hot sun can cause an ugly burn. The water is free from pollution, so feel free to join the zillon other people for a re-freshing dip. Watch and enyoy the ritual that Carioca women go through when they enter the water, it is almost always the same, truley amazing, learned from childhood, a flick of the hair, and adjusting of the bikini top, a quick dunk, another flip of the hair, adjust top and bottom, back to their tanga, and combing of the hair...always while standing up...even the 6 year olds! To me Ipanema is one of the most attractive points of Rio for its liveliness. It's one of the favorite spots for both locals and tourists, which gives the place a sparkle of movement and joy during the day, without being crowded. Even if you go at midnight, you will find groups of people gathering there!
Everything here is a delight: from swimming in the wonderfully blue waters of the beach to do sports, or shopping (in rua Vizconde da Piraja) or enjoy the night at the several pubs and restaurants here (Shenanigans or Garota de Ipanema, respectively). It is also an easy place to reach, either by bus, taxi and soon by metro (not sure if the station in Ipanema is already inaugurated)
However, I would not recommend Ipanema for lodging, it's too expensive. You can get cheaper places in Copacabana or Arpoador, just a few blocks away (see my Accommodation tips).

One of the main reasons people go to Rio is for the beaches and Ipanema was wall to wall people on a Friday afternoon. We started off at the end of the beach closest to Copacabana and headed west and it became clear that the beach was divided into sections. I didn't happen to notice the Posto divisions but the guides say that Posto 9 is where the most fit and tanned bods are, the next section is the gay beach, identifiable by the rainbow flag if you don't happen to notice all the hot young men, Posto 8 is where the kids from the favelas (slums) hang out but to us it looked like a football (soccer) beach with all the balls flying around. There are also several spots with surfers trying to catch waves, none of them very good at it! Further on in the Leblon section, is supposed to be mostly families and singles. Leave a Comment

Ipanema is situated between the Copacabana and Leblon areas and for me it's one of the best areas in town.
This sophisticated district offers a lively night life scene with an enticing blend of beach, bars and boutiques. A major attraction throughout the day, its sands also welcome countless after-dark visitors, including joggers and other athletes who cluster at its kiosks, pedal along the bicycle path and make good use of special lighting to exercise and relax.

There are few words available to describe fairly Ipanema's beauty! The beautiful beach that starts in Arpoador and goes as far as Morro Dois Irmaos (a twin rock of granite origin) has a mosaic sidewalk and a cicling lane. On weekends one lane of the avenue is closed to traffic and the people take the paved road for them selves. As usual beautiful people walk, run and cicle. It's such a healthy enviornment that you feel like beeing part of it as well. The beach is not as crouded as Copacabana because most of the hotels own lots of sand where they have a stand with food and drinks and chairs, towels and umbrellas. As for the rest is just like Copacabana. People playing soccer and volley, foot-volley and exercising on the open air gyms. There are stands and vendors everywhere and once again you can rent a chair and umbrella. Brazilians are very open people so don't be afraid if someone approaches you. In Ipanema usually it will be some guy or girl trying to hit on you. Sometimes they can be annoying but if you teld them to leave and that you are not interested they will not bother you anymore. These people are just looking to have fun and most just want to meet you. You'll be able to figure out their intentions right away and react as you think it's better. The best spot is right in front of Leblon. Families and couples go there and also singles. People are very nice there and they'll treat you just right. I've made very good friends there. One way of really enjoying this beach is to take a walk from Arpoador to Morro Dois Irmaos. It's quite a long one but it's so lovely that you'll be at the Morro before you know it! Take a while in Arpoador. It's a rock that goes right into the ocean and from there you can see as far as Pao de Acucar to the left and Pedra da Gavea to the right (when looking at the ocean).

ipanema is the place to hang out.
forget about copacabana and all the pickpockets, prostitutes and ugly sex tourists it has to offer and go to ipanema.
ipanema is where the better to do brazilians hang out and the beach is full of social life and sports.
it has a great volleyball scene in the late afternoon that should not be missed and several little beach bars line the avenue and invites you for a drink.
ipanema is not just the beach.
the back streets has a lot to offer too aswell in terms of restaurants, cafes, shopping and good life in general. Leave a Comment Directions: just south of copacabana.

Most people will tell you that Ipanema is chic as compared to Copacabana's more Bohemian, funky feel. I'm not sure I agree with that. Ipanema might be a little cleaner, with slightly more quiet streets, but for the most part, it's a neighborhood of non-descript apartment houses that appear to date from the 1960s. There is a great shopping street that runs right down the middle of it called Rua Visconde de Piraja. It runs the length of Ipanema and has many shopping options. You'll also find some great restaurants especially on Rua Paul Redfern, Rua Maria Quiteria and Rua Jangadeiros. Leave a Comment

Forget about Copacabana!!! Although it's a nice beach (but rather dangerous now a days), Ipanema has everything you need in a beach: white sands, warm water, good waves and the most beautiful women there are on the world (in those really small bikinis Rio's known for). Who can visit Rio and not set foot on one of its most famous beaches. The Jobim song of the 60's about "The Girl from Ipanema" was well known all over the World and puts a visit to the beach in a 'must see' category.
The beach is an attraction to many people to enjoy the sun, the sand and the breakers rolling in from the Atlantic.The beach vendors ply their trade in the hope that someone will buy anything from a cool drink to an ice cream to sunglasses, to you well you name it and someone will have it available for you.
