The bus service in Rio de Janeiro was to me a very grateful experience. Not only the units were modern and clean, with helpful driver and ticketer, but also the ride was good. Gotta precise, however, that I used it to go around the Zona Sul area (Barra, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Botafogo, Flamengo, Urca and Cosme Velho), so I cannot say if the service remain the same in other districts.
With the bus you can go anwhere smootly for as cheap as 1-2 reais (depending on the route). However, during traffic jams being in a bus could be a terrible experience. Finally, as pleasant as it can be, a bus can be also a good spot for pickpocketers (never saw one, however). Anyway, as prevention, don't carry much valuables while riding them, and watch out your belongings.

Unfortunately, the metro can't get you everywhere. But if you don't feel like paying for a taxi then it's a good chance you can get there by bus. Here are a few useful routes:
Alto da Boa Vista/Floresta da Tijuca - bus #221 (from centro; Praca Quinze de Novembro). Or #233/234 from the Rodoviaria.
Estrada de Ferro Corcovado - #583 (Copa.; along N.S. Copacabana) - or catch the #584 from along Rua Barata Ribeiro
Barra da Tijuca - bus #175, 179 (centro; along Av. Rio Brano) & bus #523 (Copa.; along Rua Barata Ribeiro)
Maracana - bus #238-239 (centro; Praca Quinze) & bus #455 (Copa.; along N.S. Copacabana).
Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) - bus #107 (centro; along Rua Senador Dantas) & bus #511(Copa.; N.S. Copacabana)
Santa Teresa - bus #206, 214 (centro; along Av. Rio Branco) NOTE: Taking the tram from Lapa would be more picturesque.
Jardim Botanico - bus #170 (centro;along Av. Rio Branco) & bus #572 (Copa.; Rua Barata Ribeiro)
Praca Quinze de Novembro - bus #154, 413, 415, 455 (Copa.; N.S. Copacabana) & bus #415 (Ipanema/Leblon; Visconde de Piraja, Av. Ataulfo de Paiva)

If you're in downtown Rio, there is better mass transport than in suburbs like Petrópolis. To go long distances, like between Rio and Petrópolis, I've been told that a bus from the main station downtown to Petrópolis costs about $4 U.S. each way. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

I know it is easier and easier to take a taxi and go to your hotel when you first get in Rio airport, but if you really want to save money and you are not in a rush, it doesn't hurt if you take a bus. Right in the exit of the airport..when you get out with yoru luggage, there is a bus company called REAL and it takes you to the touristic areas such as Copcabana, Ipanema and Leblon, you can jump off in the beach and walk to your hotel.
The ticket is quite low, it is about 5 reais, less than 3 american dollars.
Taking a bus to the beach area from the airport can be a very smart idea.

When I arrived at Rio's International Airport, I was frequently asked if I'd like a taxi to my hotel.
Some drivers would say R$100.00... others would say R$80.00... etc. A standard taxi fare to Copacabana is around R$35.00, maximum R$50.00. I know as I took a taxi to the airport. I organised with the taxi driver the previous evening to pick me up at a certain time from my hotel and the price was pre-arranged also. He was very prefessional and on-time!
Alternatively, there are buses to many places from the airport, such as to Flamengo, Copacabana and Ipanema. This bus goes via Rio's Downtown area and Rio's Domestic National Airport. To Copacabana, it takes about an hour. The bus is very comfortable and can handle large luggage.
I don't recall the cost, but it's around the R$5.00 mark. Great value for those on a budget.

I like taking the Onibus (with Air Condition) less crowded but about R$1 more than the normal fare. Also the Van's (comby's) that go Reeeeal Faaaast! If you can meet someone there that can show you around by bus that would be great! Just write down the number and route so you can use it by yourself. Just one thing! Watch out for early times 0600hr and afternoon 1600hr! Lot's of traffic! And DON'T FALL ASLEEP! Sometimes vendors will come on the back of the bus to sell candy or drinks. It ok. Theme: Bus

before i went to rio i read many vt comments on how crazy the bus drivers are and that buses are not safe... that is absurd! unless you havent travelled a lot.. if you go to places like korea, hong kong, it's even worse because streets are so small and yet bus drivers drive fast and crazy.. the bus drivers in rio were fine.. there wasnt anything out of the ordinary. and EVERYONE takes the bus to work .. so it is very safe. i mean come on, im a 19 year old guy and it's kinda embarassing for me to say that im scared to ride a bus when there are old ladies and kids and alone women taking the bus.. i will admit that i was kinda paranoid when i saw some strange characters come on the bus that look like thieves, but nothing really happened. to be honest, im actually scared of taking TAXIS.. because i was alone, and because im asian and people can obviously tell that i am not brazilian, i have a higher chance of being robbed by a cab. i dont know why but i just dont like taxis.. i think buses are safer because im NOT THE ONLY ONE... if im alone in a cab, anything can happen to me. they are more expensive than buses so i tried to avoid them, except like maybe 4 times. one time i came from a bar, and since the buses close i had to get a cab.. the guy didnt have the meter on so i was like how much is it? and we just agreed 10 REALs, which was a rip off but i just needed to get home. thats why i dont like cabs.. whenever i get in one, i think of them as thieves.. whenever you get out of discos or bars there will be cabs lined up.. i had my hand next to the handle just in case the guy pulled a knife on me or something so i could get away...do not get in those even though they offer you, cuz they're all hustlers... in fact, if any cab guy offers you a ride.. DO NOT go with him... think about it, why would they come up to YOU and offer you a ride? YOU should be chasing down a cab, not the other way around.. unless they plan on robbing you or overcharging.... anyways, the bus system is reliable and they are everywhere! we stayed in the copacabana beach area, the hotel is on Av. Copacabsns which is one many bus routes. the beach is on Av. Atlantica. We used the public buses to the surgur loaf , shopping Rio Sul and the Christ stature. they have stops right in front of the hotel. try not to take the buses during rush hours since it could be crowded.
