My husband loves chocolate ice cream and he had tasted some all around the world. Among the best are definitly the ones from : La Cigale in Uruguay. They have many branches all over. And not only chocolate, dozens of different flavours as well, including of course : dulce de leche!

One cannot miss visiting the Mercado del Puerto, where you will find the best asado, or barbecue, in the city. There are many restaurants to choose from. You definitely have to have a bottle of Medio y Medio to accompany your meal. I recommend going to Palenque.
Parrilla, which is essentially barbecued meat (as well as organs, so if your not too keen into eating that, make sure you ask them to substitute with more sausage or morcilla (blood sausage). Last night in Uruguay and our favorite little restaurant closed ( Sunday , late , like 11:00 pm ), we boarded a taxi and told the cabbie to take us to a good churrascaria , that is , a parrillada.... So , we arrived at El Entrevero which also is like rustic with the feeling of an old place , lost in time , but in reality a smartly conceived restaurant with an interior that gives you instant appetite..... A rich menu , lots of goodies , Camila and I couldn't resist having red meat again..... So , we basically ordered the same as usual , blood sausage ( Camila and I are hooked on this...) which comes in two types ( "salty" and "sweet"..) , the salty being the "ordinary" that we know , if we love this and the sweet made with cinammon as ingredient , heavenly....... Then the chunk of wooden-log bbqued red meat , no matter which cut , everything melts on the tongue accompanied by baked potato with butter, parsley and a bit of garlic and of course fresh , crispy bread and the uruguayan passion , chimichuri...... Very recomendable , solid restaurant with optimal performance...
No way to pinpoint a single dish nor describe the why and the how of the taste .... It's the perfect restaurant for the "seafood diet ", you see it , you eat it..... Well , the sweet blood sausage needs another hailing...... hmmmmmmmmmm.... getting weak just thinking about it...... This restaurant specializes in pasta, which in Colonia is usually homemade. The menu of the day offers a choice of pastas, a dessert and a glass of wine (or pop) for one low fixed price. Comfortable interior and friendly service. Leave a Comment

The inside of the Mercado building is filled with parrilla "restaurants". They consist of a giant BBQ grill where all possible cuts of beef as well as sausages, chicken, and other "stuff" (read "organ meat") are cooked. Customers sit on stools at a long counter and order from the overhead menu. These are meat and potato places. Vegetarians, stay away!!
I had a half order of "pulpa" (beef) & fries and a glass of red wine. Servings are really big, so a half order was enough for me. The whole thing cost me only 175 pesos (less than US $7). I discovered this cafe on my first morning in Colonia, when I was looking for breakfast, and ended up returning every morning. Interestingly, it was very quiet and shady in the morning. People only started showing up around noon, and by 3:00pm it was crowded and people were baking in the sun! I liked it in the morning for its quietness and good people (and car) watching opportunities, as it's right along the main plaza (or in Colonia's case: main grassy patch!) :-)
I only had the cafe latte and medialunas (croissants), but they were very good. Leave a Comment Theme: CoffeehousePrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: Right along the Plaza Major (main square).

Well, I'm not totally sure about the name ( it says on the window : La Parrillada Don Pascoal ) , but parrillada is every steak or bbq house in Argentina and Uruguay and Don Pascoal , I believe , is an uruguayan wine brand sponsoring bbq-houses with free wine in return for brand advertising in and outside....... and... I have not ONE picture of the place because I didn't expect really to drop into such a JEWEL of a place which would have really been a dignified eatery in every sense for taking pics... but my camera stayed in the hotel room.... The place is tiny and cramped... if you show up at 10:00 pm you will have to wait to be seated when a table ( out of maybe 12 or 13 ) becomes available. Camila and I just as the party ahead of us and another one behind us were waiting inside ( cold weather !!!) and standing in the way of the two very , very efficient and quick waitresses. While waiting you can't resist eyeing the plates in front of the lucky ones who are eating allready , giant steaks of all kind of cuts , pork ribs , delicious blood sausages , baked potatoes , salads... and you're asking yourself where they're preparing all this , because the "kitchen" is so tiny with the big log bbq that takes allmost the whole back space of the place.... The atmosphre is fantastic , there's a sense of camaradery and almost friendship between the patrons , an elderly , very well groomed and elegant couple just talked to us from 3 meters away , giving Camila tips on which wine to drink with which meat.... the very slightly "arrogant" and intimate friendliness of the people, waitresses and owner of the place struck a chord with us and we felt like at home being pampered with the absolute best food on this planet....
I had pork ribs , blood sausage and baked potatoes with a hefty portion of crispy fresh bread with chimichuri, Camila couldn't resist the blood sausage (black pudding for UKers), had a gigantic steak ( picanha ! ) with tomato/lettuce salad... she followed the couples advice and had a very good glass of red wine ( probably Don Pascoal ? lol...) and I had my usual grapefruit soft drink , because that's what I like.... The food , pure heaven , 5 stars and the atmosphere too.... No way to describe the place with better words... simple and straight , one of the top five ever...... ( open only , I believe , for dinner...)
